INDIANAPOLIS – November 25, 2009. Apostolic News. A mother of two lost her life on the east side of Indianapolis Tuesday night in a hit and run accident.
It happened in the 4900 block of East 38th Street at around 7:45 p.m. Kristen Grimes, 28, had just left a meeting at her church.
Police told 24-Hour News 8 late Wednesday afternoon they have arrested 24-year-old Aaron Hatchett.
He faces a preliminary charge of leaving the scene of an accident that resulted in death.
“You never realize how much someone means to you until they’re gone,” said Wesley Grimes, Kristen’s husband.
Wesley had been married to Kristen for less than a year.
He is the stepdad to her two sons, five-year-old Taboy and three-year-old Zion.
Wesley was on the phone with Kristen Tuesday night as she was waiting for a bus to take her home.
She had just attended a meeting at Mt. Zion Apostolic Church, where she had been a member for several years.
“She was asking what time the bus came, and the next thing I know is I hear her scream,” said Wesley.
Police told 24-Hour News 8 a gray four-door Chevrolet was heading west on 38th when it hit Grimes and then kept on going.
“They couldn’t resuscitate her,” said Wesley. “They even brought her in the hospital, they still tried, and they couldn’t bring her back.”
Kristen Grimes leaves behind a church that cared about her.
“She was a really nice young lady,” said Pastor Anita Stone. “She loved the Lord and she wanted to serve him and do the best she could for him.”
Church members plan to do all they can to comfort Wesley, who now wears his wife’s wedding and engagement rings on a chain around his neck.
The stone in the engagement ring was blown out by the impact of the accident.
“I don’t know what to do,” said Wesley. “It hurts so much that the last thing I heard was her scream.”
