burnedLee County, MS - March 19, 2010. Sandra and Erickson Forster overlook where just a day ago stood their church, the Rock Pentecostal Apostolic Church, and today only devastation remains. Living only 125 feet from the church the couple said having watched the events unfold, today is a blessing.

“God really had his hand in it because the firemen said that the tanks were searing but nevertheless he had his angels watching,” Sandra Forster said. “The tanks didn’t blow up. My home didn’t blow up. My son lives right next door, and we’re all still living.”

A sanctuary door, some folding chairs, a desk and a Bible are some of the only things left in a pile of ash and debris. The leaders of the church said the fire destroyed more than just a building. it destroyed a symbol of hard work and dedication.

Church members said they will rebuild, but until then nothing will stop them from continuing to be a church family.

“It’s just a sad time right now but I know we will bounce back from it,” Assistant Pastor Erickson Forster said.

Church leadership said area churches have already reached out to the congregation, offering them a place to worship until a new building is constructed.

The State Fire Marshall has ruled out foul play and says the fire began in a hallway near the church’s kitchen. The cause has yet to be determined.
