Sister Connie Ballestero, wife of Rev. Carl J. Ballestero, passed away on January 13.

Brief History of the Ballesteros

Carl Ballestero first met his wife while he attended Andrew Baker’s church (which is were he was baptized in Jesus’ Name). Brother Baker was one of the early fathers of the Pentecostal Assemblies of the World. Content (Connie) Faith Gleason was a niece to Andrew Baker, and this is where Brother and Sister Ballestero first met. They were subsequently married in 1943. Brother Ballestero was discharged from the Army and he and his wife went full-time into the Apostolic ministry.

Brother Ballestero pastored for 25 years and evangelized for 25 years. Altogether, he pastored nine churches. His first pastorate was in Clinga, California, followed by tenures in, Aneheim, and Vista, California; Yakeymo, Washington; Columbus, and South Bend, Indiana; salt Lake City, Utah; and Sulphur, Louisiana. He was in South Bend from 1960 to 1972.

On September 11, 1994, after battling with Alzheimers desease, Brother Carl Ballestero completed the race that he had so nobley began and endured. It could be said of him, “Another Soldier has come home” and now his wife happily joins her beloved husband of 51 years and her oldest daughter, Beverly Anne Ballestero.

“Nothing happens unless first a dream.” – Carl Sandburg

Dreams.

We all have them.

Some are childish while others inspire us to reach beyond the walls of our comfort zones into a new dimension. In a society saturated with fantasy, it’s easy to lose focus while comfortably enfolded in our dreams and desires. Dreams with feet are dreams in action. They diminish the world of “what if” or “if only” and breathe life into faiths remarkable possibilities.

Are we letting the fear of failure keep us from stepping into unchartered waters of potential success?

As children of God we are called to go beyond the simple walls of the here and now – we are created to reach the impossible because“…with God all things are possible.” (Mark 10:27).

So how do we make our dreams a reality?

FIRST, We Need to Pray

Our hopes, dreams and wishes must be in line with God’s desires for our life. Without it, we are simply running in circles, like a caged hamster going nowhere. What dreams is God dreaming for you?

SECOND, Make a List

You may have many dreams and desires but what should you pursue first? Make a list of things you want to accomplish and then prioritize. Be prepared and know what tasks you will be facing before you have to face them. Having a plan will eliminate many frustrations as well as help keep you on task.

THIRD, Be Realistic

We often quit before the journey begins because we set unrealistic expectations for ourselves. Know your limits – Take things one day at a time — Don’t take on more than you can handle!

FOURTH, Ask for Help

No one can change the world by themselves – we all need a little help sometimes. Speak with a church leader, mentor or friend about your dreams and then be prepared to answer questions on how you plan on reaching your goal. Their insights and opinions could be one of your most valuable assets. “The way of a fool is wise in his own eyes but a wise man listens to advice.” Proverbs 12:15

BERLIN – January 22, 2012. The Merneptah Stele has long been touted as the earliest extrabiblical reference to Israel. The ancient Egyptian inscription dates to about 1205 B.C.E. and recounts the military conquests of the pharaoh Merneptah. Near the bottom of the hieroglyphic inscription, a people called “Israel” is said to have been wiped out by the conquering pharaoh.

But a new publication by Egyptologists and Biblical scholars Manfred Görg, Peter van der Veen and Christoffer Theis suggests that there may be an even earlier reference to Israel in the Egyptian record. Görg discovered a broken statue pedestal containing hieroglyphic name-rings in the Egyptian Museum of Berlin (pictured) and, after studying it with his colleagues, they suggest that one of the name-rings should be read as “Israel.” This newly rediscovered inscription is dated to around 1400 B.C.E.–about 200 years earlier than the Merneptah Stele.

More than 150 medieval Jewish manuscripts recently came to light in the mountains of northern Afghanistan, according to scholars who have been studying the texts at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Although scholars have only just begun studying the decayed, fragmentary and often illegible texts, they appear to date to the 11th century and are written in Judeo-Arabic and Judeo-Persian. Among the discovered texts are an ancient copy of the Book of Jeremiah, previously unknown works of the medieval Jewish scholar Rabbi Sa’adia Gaon and several personal writings and poems, perhaps written by the Jewish merchants who left the manuscripts in the remote Afghanistan cave where they were supposedly discovered.

During a recent WPF Leadership Meeting aboard the USS Midway, an aircraft carrier that was launched during WWII and served through Desert Storm, we were given the amazing fact that the average age of those who served on that ship was nineteen.

Though it is not the fastest growing church in North America or the world, the Mormons have grown primarily due to the active involvement of some 50,000 young people who volunteer to go at their own expense on a mission that lasts 2 years for the young men and 18 months for the young women.

They have a strict dress code and a tough schedule. They must work 16 hours per day, 6 days per week. They are only allowed two phone calls home per year. The Mormons do not have the TRUTH! They do not have the POWER! They do have willing young people and they have a plan.

I refuse to believe that Apostolic young people have less desire or willingness than Mormon youth. What we have lacked is a plan.

Apostolics have the TRUTH! Apostolics have the POWER of the HOLY GHOST! Apostolics have willing young people and NOW WE HAVE A PLAN! Worldwide Pentecostal Fellowship HOPE CORPS!

From the hearts of burdened and believing pastors to the hearts of energetic and excited young people passes an initiative that will rock the world.

Hope Corps is a means of advancing the kingdom of God through involving Apostolic young people, singles, couples and retirees in meaningful kingdom building activities globally.

Eventually a person’s education, experience and abilities can be harnessed and directed to areas in the world where they may have an impact on God’s kingdom and allow the individual to be personally involved in short term missions projects. Involving trustworthy saints in this type of work, with the approval and oversight of their pastor, will bless the kingdom of God locally and globally, bring a sense of fulfillment to the individual, and create a more Kingdom minded congregation.

The logical place for such a plan to begin is with young people. There is a constant supply of young men and women graduating from high school with great hopes for their future. Young people are looking for direction in their life. Many high school grads take a ‘gap year’ to travel or be involved in charitable work before they settle into an occupation or go on to post secondary education. Jesus said, “Seek ye first the kingdom of God and His righteousness…”

Hope Corps has exploded in growth in the past year with over 150 students! It is only the third year since its inception when it started with 22 students. The students will graduate in May and plan their first on site missionary training in New York and Honduras.

Similar seals are mentioned in the Mishnah and discussed in the Talmud. “This is the first time an object of this kind has been found,” said Shukron and Reich. “Products being brought to the Temple had to be stamped pure, which is what this seal was used for.”

Six Ways to Stay Happy and Healthy

1. Count Your Blessings.

Research shows that people who make a habit of being grateful feel better about their lives overall, were more optimistic about the future, and reported fewer health problems.

2. Laugh Often.

Laughter, like so many other endorphin-triggers, helps to reduce certain stress hormones and strengthens your immune system.

3. Do Something Nice for Someone Else

Evidence shows that helping others makes people feel better about themselves as well as improving the wellbeing of whoever is on the receiving end of the support.

4. Smile.

A study conducted by the British Dental Health Foundation showed the act of smiling improves your mood, can improve your confidence, help you make friends, and help you to succeed in your career.

5. Take a Vacation.

There is increasing evidence that taking a vacation is important for your physical health. People who failed to take annual vacations were 32 percent more likely to die of a heart attack.

6. Get God

Survey after survey shows that people with a strong religious faith are happier people. David Myers, a social psychologist at Michigan’s Hope College, says that studies show that faith provides social support, a sense of purpose and a reason to focus beyond the self which in turn helps people feel happier about their lives.

Have a holly jolly Christmas…And in case you didn’t hear…Oh by golly have a holly jolly Christmas
This year!

Merry Christmas!

Coins discovered beneath the foundations of Jerusalem’s Western Wall prove that Herod the Great did not even come close to completing construction on the Temple Mount compound. The coins, stamped around 17 C.E. with the name of the Roman proconsul Valerius Gratus, were found inside an earlier ritual bath (mikveh) that had been filled in to support the construction of the Temple Mount’s western wall—some two decades after Herod’s death. The finds tend to confirm the account of the Jewish historian Flavius Josephus who records that the entire complex was only completed during the reign of Herod’s great-grandson, Agrippa II, probably around 50 C.E. “The find changes the way we see the construction,” said Israel Antiquities Authority archaeologist Eli Shukron. “[The coins] show [the Temple Mount’s construction] lasted for longer than we originally thought.”
